Environment illustration

My fairy tale world.

This project focused on studying composition, lighting, and shadows to create a drawing with strong depth and visual impact. The artwork had to effectively convey a sense of space and atmosphere while aligning with the storytelling we developed. While the choice of world and setting was flexible, it needed to complement the narrative and enhance the overall storytelling.

The project: We had to study composition by drawing an environment with proper storytelling.

Provider of the project: Sint Lucas

Made with: Clip Studio Paint

Project Challenge

I chose a fairy tale world because I really enjoy fantasy. While working on this I faced a lot of struggle with composition. I didn’t really know how it worked but I somehow managed to draw a top view.

Storytelling:

Hidden deep within an ancient forest lay a small yet enchanting kingdom— the Kingdom of Esperia. Though modest in size, Esperia was renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, exquisite liquors, vibrant fabrics, and the delicate flowers that wove themselves into the castle walls, painting the stone with nature’s artistry.

From an open window, framed by the twisting embrace of a circular tree branch, Princess Peluna gazed at the little birds flitting past. She loved this view, the way the sky stretched endlessly beyond the rooftops, kissed by the golden light of the setting sun. Her auburn locks shimmered like fire in the sunlight, strands of gold woven between them, while her pointed elven ears peeked through. As her fingers traced the rough bark of the branch, small blossoms unfurled in her wake.

“Spring is nearly here again,” she murmured, a soft smile gracing her lips. “It feels like yesterday… Soon, these castle walls will be in full bloom once more.”

The gentle breeze stirred the white fabric drapes on the balcony, their golden embroidery catching the sunlight, rippling like liquid gold.

A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts.

“Lady Peluna?”

“Come in,” she replied, turning just as the door creaked open.

Tela, her dearest friend, entered with a warm smile. She wore a flowing lilac gown, the soft hue complementing her cascading golden hair. Peluna’s face lit up as she rushed forward, taking Tela’s hands.

“Tela, you’re here!”

With laughter bubbling between them, they twirled across the velvet carpet in the center of the room, their joy awakening tiny flowers that sprouted between their steps.

“Have you seen it?” Tela beamed, excitement dancing in her voice. “Spring will finally return—after a hundred years. Can you believe it? The kingdom will shine brighter than ever before! The sun’s warmth will linger, the golden hour will bless us, and the grand festivals can begin again!”

Peluna stepped onto the balcony, inhaling deeply as if she could already taste the renewal in the air.

“It will be wonderful, Lady Peluna. And so will you.” Tela’s voice was warm with reassurance. “Don’t forget—your wings will grow again.”

Gently, she plucked a flower from the branch and tucked it into Peluna’s hair. Together, they gazed over the kingdom, where golden rooftops, cascading flowers, and pristine white walls bathed in the afternoon light. Below, the elves of Esperia bustled through the streets, their vibrant clothing and joyous laughter painting a picture of harmony.

Here, no one was lesser than another. Esperia was a kingdom of wealth, love, and unity—where all flourished together.

And soon, with the return of spring, it would be even more radiant than ever before.

Thank you!
