During my masterclass, we got to design our own characters and practice silhouettes—so fun! My character, Yo-Jung Dae, is a 286-year-old guardian fairy (and technically a princess!) who is the last of her kind. She watches over the secret garden in Huwon with so much love and care, especially for her precious water lilies, which hold her magical powers. By day, she tends to the garden, and by night, she twirls under the moonlight, making everything sparkle like crystals. She has a sweet but slightly stubborn bond with Prince Yae-Hyuk—especially when he messes with her lilies! Will she be able to protect both her garden and maybe even his heart?
The project: design an original character with proper storytelling.
Provider of the project: Sint Lucas
Made with: Clip Studio Paint
During this project, I faced a few challenges. Creating 9 unique silhouette designs while keeping Yo-Jung’s essence was tricky, and narrowing them down to my final choice took a lot of decision-making. I also had to balance detail and readability, ensuring the design stayed clear while adding intricate elements. Working in grayscale was another challenge, as I had to use shading effectively without relying on color. Lastly, refining my final design in Clip Studio Paint required me to navigate the tools efficiently to bring my character to life.
I used grayscale shading and color theory in my work to improve my character design. Grayscaling helped me focus on shape, contrast, and readability before adding color. Applying color theory allowed me to create harmony, balance, and mood in my final design. This process helped me better understand how values and colors work together to enhance a character’s visual appeal.
